They always said curiosity killed the cat, and that day Kyou proved
it. He'd gotten home from school early (more like skipped) when
something caught his eye. On the floor of Shigure's study lay an open
notebook.
It was a plain black notebook with reddish-orange autumn leaves
decorated on the front and back cover. A spiral bound notebook that
really didn't weigh very much when Kyou bent to pick it up.
He gave into the urge to look inside; there was never a question of
whether he would anyway- and thumbed it open. The first few pages
where all blank, lined sheets, but as he kept flipping something dark
caught his eyes.
Etched into the margin of the page was a drawn profile of Kyou. He
let his eyes drift over the text written on the once clean crisp
page. And in black ink he found his name pressed into the white paper.
Finding this, he franticly looked through the rest of the pages to
find that every page he looked through was about him. This made him
wonder just who had written it, hoping it wasn't the dog. A chill ran
down his spine at the thought, almost as bad as when the snake was
around. Kyou wanted to put down the book but something compelled him
to look further.
If it *was* something that the dirty dog owned, and there was a
picture of *him* in it, it would just be too much! Living under this
perverted moron's roof was bad enough. Shigure, the dirty bastard
would have gleaned one benefit too many from having him in the house.
(Kyou was also made to rake the lawn and make food for Shigure when
Tohru can't be found.)
When he got to the end of the notebook there was a bunch of small
words written at the corner on the right. He had to squint to
actually read what it said. Momentarily he blinked and read it again
just to be sure of what he saw.
'To you, my dear Kyou, I dedicate this. You'll never know how much
you mean to me.'
Kyou's hands started to shake; he didn't know what to make of all
this. Aside from his baffled first impression, his thoughts revolved
unceasingly on who it could be that was addressing him. Past the
confusion, his hectic thoughts focused on one simple fact: this was
not Shigure's handwriting. He knew that much.
But if it wasn't the dog's, whose was it? The handwriting didn't
seem to be Tohru's nor was it the familiar scrawl of Kagura. Despite
that the writing was familiar. Before Kyou could think about it for
long, he heard the sound of the front door being opened. Kyou
panicked and hid the notebook under his shirt, trying not to be
noticed as he entered his room.
He heard the faint shuffling sound of fabric and then footsteps
climbing the stairs. Who could it be? Oh what did it matter, he was
tired of speculation. Might as well try to compose himself and don
his usual I-don't-a-shit-about-you expression. He molded his grimace
of apprehension into a scowl.
There was a light knock on his door and then without waiting for an
answer it opened, it was Haru. For a second he wondered why he had
felt such a panic take over him. He had no real reason to be afraid
it wasn't like he was doing something wrong.
Kyou kept the notebook hidden under his shirt but instead shifted it
so it was behind his back. Considering his shirt was pretty much
skintight, he didn't have to keep his hands behind his back. Haru
looked as him questioningly.
Kyou forced an irritated, questioning expression onto his face,
erasing the nervousness and anxiety as best he could. His shirt was
pulled even tighter by the book underneath, and he felt extremely
self-conscious and paranoid that Haru would notice something was
wrong. He didn't want to be found hiding something that wasn't his
like this, something that was very dangerous and he could be sure
would occupy his thoughts furiously until he solved the mystery of
who it belonged to.
He was growing even more nervous as the seconds past. To have Haru
find it… he didn't even want to think about it. The air was growing
thick with tension. "What?" Kyou asked, irritated.
"I left something important here." Haru stated simply, he loved to
watch Kyou react. It was like watching dancing flames.
Kyou's heart skipped a beat. Something important? He suddenly became
ultra conscious of the hard edges of the notebook pressing stickily
against the skin of his back .. Could it be.. that it was his? Kyou's
heart resumed beating far too fast as at the thought.
"Oh really and what the hell would you leave laying here?" He wasn't
quite sure if he wanted it to be Haru's or anybody's for that matter.
"It's something that's very dear to me. Have you seen it?" Haru
leaned against the doorframe with a smirk. It was as if he knew Kyou
had found it, and was hoping he had read it.
Kyou swallowed nervously, his heart still beating a rapid tattoo in
his chest as he watched the quiet, amused ease with which Haru
questioned him. He didn't know what to do. "I.. haven't seen
anything lying around." Kyou mumbled, giving Haru a pointed look
Are you sure?" Haru asked, as he moved away from the door and
approached Kyou. Kyou moved back until he hit the wall. He had been
caught. "You wouldn't happen to have it, do you?"
"I'm su- sure," Kyou replied hastily. "Wh-what are you doing here
in
the first place? Get away from me!" Kyou cried rather desperately.
No! If he drew any closer, if he looked over his shoulder.. The cow
would know he had it, that infernal little book that started all of
the cat's problems in the first place! Unfortunately Haru could not
be deterred from his delicious little treat by just a few harsh words
from his kitten, or indeed a few loud shouts.
"You're always so tense, maybe all you need is just a back massage."
Haru let a wicked smile play across his lips as Kyo's eyes
momentarily widened, but had yet to do anything.
Kyou lay shivering motionless beneath Haru as the ushi Jyuunishi
knelt above him. He gasped and squeezed his eyes shut tight when he
felt Haru's fingers slide slowly under the hem of his shirt and pull
out the book. The cover snaked along Kyou's skin and he cringed as
he heard the quiet chuckle that escaped Haru's lips. He heard the
light thud of the book being placed on the ground, his shirt was
pulled off of him, gently eased over his head and then Haru's hands
were back on him. Tensing, Kyou wondered wildly what Haru was doing,
massaging his back and shoulders as he was.
"Why so tense Kyou? If a massage won't help, maybe..." Haru paused
looking back at the book and a grin appeared on his face. "We could
do something else" The book really didn't matter, as it was just a
ploy to get to Kyou.
Haru's hands dipped lower along his back and Kyou found himself
arching into the touch. Haru let out an amused laugh and slipped his
arms under Kyou's chest to bring him closer. Warmth flooded Kyou's
body as he mewled at the treatment Haru was giving him
Haru continued to stroke his back soothingly, as he gently lifted the
insensible cat onto his lap. All the while Kyou docilely allowed
himself to be manipulated as long as that wonderful touch on his oh
so sensitive back continued.
This wasn't exactly what he'd expected to happen when he stumbled
along the notebook, but he was deeply enjoying every damn second of
it. He couldn't help but feel that there was something else he
needed... wanted from this situation.
The feel of Haru's hands kneading and roaming his back wasn't enough
for him. He needed something else, however, his moment of bliss ended
as the sound of a door sliding open was heard..
"Oh, pardon me. I didn't realize you two were busy." Kyou stared
aghast at Shigure, who stood in the doorway with his hand on his hip
and a cocky twist of the corner his mouth. Kyou felt like his heart
stopped beating for a moment: here he was... sitting in Haru's lap
with said other's hands on him, and obviously enjoying the physical
assault.
"Shigure, thanks for helping with the book and all, but your timing
sucks." Haru retorted playfully.
"What?!" Kyou shouted, and then looked at Shigure. "You knew...
you
did this?" All of the hiding, the interrogation from Haru, it was all
just a plan. "But...why?"
"Kyou, Kyou, you're so naive." Shigure laughed as he watched the two
teens on the floor hastily try to regain their composure.
Haru groaned in frustration, all his work ruined. What had he ever
done to the dog to deserve such a punishment?
Kyou whirled on Haru, face a mask of anger and hurt. His eyes
searched Haru's face of any hint of remorse and when finding only his
usual smooth expressionless mask, his own face went blank before he
took at swing at Haru's face with a fist.
Haru didn't dodge the blow although he clearly saw it coming at him.
His expression didn't change one bit except for perhaps his eyes,
which in that moment before the blow connected, was naked and bared
for all the world to see. They never left Kyou's furious face.
"Kyou, don't you think that's a bit uncalled for?" Questioned Shigure.
Kyou said nothing and instead stormed out of the room, pushing past
Shigure in the process. He couldn't believe it. It was all a set
up... But why?
Kyou didn't want to think that he was merely being toyed with. He
wouldn't be able to stand that if he was. When he had been scanning
through the book such a short time ago, he had felt like Haru had
actually felt something for him.
When he passed Shigure, he heard the inu murmur in a teasing
voice; "so sorry you didn't get to play with the kitty any more Haru-
kun. I hate to walk in on you like this, having your fun like
that." Haru gave Shigure a chilling look upon the insinuation the
dog was making, and tromped past him to chase after Kyou.
"Kyou" Haru said softly. Kyou didn't look at him. Haru didn't know
what he could say or do to make the neko believe that he wasn't just
toying with him. What he had written was true. `Damn Shigure.' Haru
thought as he tightened his fists in anger.
Red clouded Haru's vision at Shigure's betrayal, "I'm helping you."
Haru heard Shigure say as he took a step forward...
"This plan is sure to work," Haru took another step and the smile on
Shigure's face became more desperate. "Now Haru, you aren't sour
over a little joke are you?" Shigure asked as Haru advanced
menacingly..
~*~
"Thank you for walking me home Sohma-kun." Tohru said as she and Yuki
walked into the house. Something moved on the floor causing Tohru to
scream. Yuki moved between the lump and Tohru..
"Shigure?" Yuki called.
"What happened to you?" Tohru asked worriedly.
"Nothing much Tohru-san, just a little joke gone wrong." Shigure
replied jokingly. "Heheh.. never get between Haru and what he wants!
He'll go black on you..." With that Shigure slumped over and passed
out, bloody nose dripping all over the floor. Tohru and Yuki just
looked at each other blankly. What the hell happened while they were
gone?
Tohru quickly recovered and applied herself to fluttering anxiously
around the comatose dog.
"Oi! Baka neko, where are you? Tohru brought back dinner for you!"
Yuki yelled, turning back to Tohru. "He must be up on the roof again."

Kyou shifted his chilled body on the shingles of the rooftop; the
moon was a pale slice of ice. His shirt was still inside shigure's
study, forgotten, but he would much rather burn it than wear it or so
much as look at it. He couldn't bring himself to be reminded of what
had happened to cause it to be discarded…
Slowly Haru made his way up onto the roof and of the house. He felt
bad for how things had turned out, none of it was supposed to happen
that way. Kyou was someone he'd felt strongly for and a person he
would never want to hurt in such a way.
Moving the last stretch to reach the orange haired boy, Haru steeled
his courage and sat down beside him on the edge.
"What do you want now?" Kyou asked quietly, his gaze never leaving
the stars above his head.
Haru lowered himself to lie side by side to Kyou, touching shoulders
and thigh. He whispered back "I just wanted you to know that
everything in the book was true… about you, and about me."
"Who's going to believe you?" Kyou said quietly. He didn't move away
from Haru's warmth, but he still managed to look entirely removed
from Haru's words.
"Kyou.... you're very important to me and if there was one thing I'd
change it would be the whole damn approach."
Kyou bowed his head, turned away from Haru and tightened his arms
around his knees, "and what would you do differently?" Kyou
questioned hesitatingly.
"Well, for starters I would have locked the door."
Kyou gave a strangled half snort, which seem to evoke more suppressed
emotions coming out in little whimpers and broken sobs
Haru couldn't believe that he was the one who had caused Kyou to
break down like this, like he didn't have a single wall between
himself and the world left. Determination to keep Kyou from breaking
apart made Haru fling his arms tightly around Kyou's bared shoulders
and bring him to closer to himself.
He wanted to save Kyou not from himself but from all the pain that
had ever been inflicted on him. He tried to convey that through his
body, his warmth, and the tender kisses he spread over his soft hair.
His grip around the weeping boy tightening as if his embrace could
squeeze the hurt away.
Haru closed his eyes and whispered, "I'm sorry, I'll understand... if
you don't forgive me after this. Too much has happened to you… I
don't know what I was thinking… Except that I wanted you to know how
I feel." He rubbed his cheek against Kyou silky hair as the cat's
sobs died down, face blocked from view by Haru's chest. "Too much of
a coward to be serious about it saying it, but too selfish to keep it
to myself.." He wrapped his arms around Kyou's torso and pulled him
close so that the cat's body covered his own. "Don't cry anymore
because of me, okay?"
There was a faint muffled murmur from the orange haired boy's
direction but Haru couldn't catch it. "Kyou..?" he inquired.
"Everything in there... you're telling me the truth.. you were being
sincere?" Kyou wanted to believe him and all he would need is for
Haru to just say it and maybe-
"Every page, every word, every single letter, Kyou." The boy smiled
self-deprecatingly.
"Then it was my fault.."
"What?" Haru was startled.
"It was my fault… You didn't do anything wrong." Kyou gazed at him
with puffy red eyes, "I made it far worse than it was, because I
didn't believe that it could be true... what you said."
He reached out a hand to the bruise on Haru's face but let it drop
before it made contact. "Promise me you'll tell me when you stop
loving me. When you just don't feel the same way anymore." Kyou
rubbed his face against Haru's neck kittenishly, and bit playfully.
Haru was astonished; Kyou felt the same way? For how long? That
wasn't important though, as it finally sank in that Kyou loved him.
He laughed out loud, "I don't think it would ever be necessary, but I
promise you I'll be truthful."
"Thank you." Kyou whispered softly. A yawn disrupted his serious mien
and he stretched luxuriously. Haru smiled to himself, his kyon kyon
could be so cute… and sexy. Too tired to even spare a thought for his
libido, he made room for his sleepy kitten under his arm as the boy
snuggled in. That night was the first night they spent together, and
a prelude to many more nights to come.
