CHAPTER 5
----------------------------
“Yuki. Kyo.” it said sternly. Yuki gulped and faced his impending doom.
Kyo had the look of a deer caught in the headlights. They both turned towards the sound of the voice. They were caught and they knew it.
“...!” Yuki looked at who was standing there, and said nothing. Kyo, too, merely stood there gaping. Finally someone spoke.
“YOU STUPID GIRL! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, YOU NEARLY GAVE US A HEART ATTACK!!!”
Yuki nodded his agreement, although looking somewhat relieved to see one of the Prince Yuki Fan Club members standing there, instead of Akito or another member of the zodiac.
“I—I’m so sorry! I just was coming by to give Yuki some fresh leeks! I know he likes them...”
Kyo made a face at this, but Yuki managed a small, shaky smile.
“Why thank you Minagawa-san. How thoughtful.”
“Well I, well I—“She blushed a deep crimson.
“It would be helpful, Minagawa-san, if you didn’t mention to anyone about seeing us here...”
“Oh, uh, of course!” she exclaimed. “What...are you doing here, if I may ask...”
“You may not ask,” hissed Kyo, narrowing his eyes at her. She backed away slightly and bowed.
“Well, uh, goodbye then!” She hurriedly ran off back to town. Yuki blinked once or twice, and then turned to Kyo.
“I suggest we continue moving,” he said.
“Yeah, I second that one...lets get going before they catch up.”
Nothing else was said about the president of the Prince Yuki Fan Club, and the two walked in silence.
“...How’s the arm Yuki,” asked Kyo. Yuki looked over at him and gave him a ‘how do you think you moron’ look. Kyo fell silent again. The only sounds throughout the woods were the snapping of twigs once in a while, when they stepped on one. And the chirping birds.
Kyo slowed, and quietly commented, “Akito loves birds.”
Yuki glanced over at him, a concerned look on his face. “What do you mean by that?”
“Well I’m just sayin, that they could be spying on us...”
“Don’t be stupid,” Yuki mumbled. But inside she shivered; he was afraid Kyo was right.
“Stop.” Yuki put an arm out to stop Kyo from moving any further.
“What?” Kyo complained, crossing his arms.
“Do you hear that? They’re pretty close...”
Kyo paled. “But,” he whispered, “but how is that possible? They were so far behind!”
Yuki took a shuddering breath, and pulled Kyo behind a tree. “Be very, very quiet and still.”
Kyo’s eyes were wide and he even stopped breathing for a moment, in fear that he would be breathing too loud. But something about Yuki calmed him. Yuki was in control, perfectly sane, and yet...his eyes had fear in them, and his posture was even more ridged then normal. Kyo knew that Yuki was just as scared, if not more scared, then he was, and he was still taking it. It prompted Kyo to stop shaking and stand up straighter. He became more alert, and finally heard what Yuki was hearing.
“I don’t know if they went this way Akito...the woods are quite big you know, they may have gone in the opposite direction.” Shigure’s voice rang loudly through the forest.
“We don’t even know if they are together, or even alive. The weather is too damp for you, we should get you home to rest.” That was Hatori.
/Listen to them, dammit listen to them and leave!/ Kyo reached out and grabbed Yuki’s hand reassuringly. Yuki had lost his poise and now looked terrified, while Kyo was now thinking more clearly then ever.
“No,” Akito snapped, “Look, footprints!”
“There are three sets there Akito. Yuki and Kyo wouldn’t travel with another person.” Hatori spoke quietly, being the voice of reason.
“Plus, the two hate each other,” Shigure said in a singsong voice, “why would they decide to run away together?”
There was a long pause from Akito. Suddenly he began to cough violently. Yuki reflexively started forward to help him, and Kyo caught his arm and pulled him back.
“Don’t you see it’s a trick to make us come out!” Kyo hissed in Yuki’s ear. Comprehension dawned on the rat, and he stepped closer to Kyo, who wrapped his arms around him tightly. The two boys stood there, locked in an embrace and waiting for the worst.
Kyo breathed in the scent of Yuki’s hair, which smelled like strawberries and peaches. And he wondered how it could all end like this, when they were so close, and they had just found each other. The worst thing that Akito could do to him would be to modify Yuki’s memory so that he hated Kyo again. That thought made Kyo wince, because then all he would be left with would be the gnawing pain of knowing that you could have been. He would rather kill himself then have to go through that again. But maybe Akito would be merciful, and erase his memory as well.
Akito’s couching fit came to an abrupt halt and he pushed Hatori off him with newfound strength.
“Get off me you idiots,” he exclaimed harshly. Kyo peeked around the trunk cautiously and wished that he hadn’t. Akito hadn’t seen him, but he had certainly seen Akito. And he looked bloody murderous. His eyes were brimming with fury and his face was twisted into an angry scowl.
Kyo heard the thrashing about in the bushes, and he knew that Akito was drawing nearer and nearer to their tree. Yuki looked so pale that Kyo thought he might pass out.
“Yuki,” he whispered urgently, his mind buzzing urgently with a plan, “Follow my lead!”
Kyo watched in horror as Akito materialized from behind the tree, fists clenched, teeth grinding and a furious look upon his face.
And then, Kyo had to smother laughter.
No, he was not going insane from fear.
He and Yuki had hidden, up in the tree.
From down below, Kyo saw that Akito looked, if possible, even more livid then before.
/Ha! He knows he’s been tricked, he just can’t figure out how! This is a moment I will want to remember forever. It’s right up there with beating Yuki in a fight and stripping him in that cave...oops, time to get out of that particular line of thought.../
Yuki’s hand strayed to rest on Kyo’s, and he smiled. Akito, Shigure and Hatori had left and the coast seemed to be clear.
“Time to get down now,” Yuki proclaimed, obviously happy to get down from the uncomfortable tree. But Kyo took one look down again and his stomach lurched.
“Uh...Yuki?”
“Yeah,” Yuki asked, looking up at Kyo. He was already halfway down the tree.
“I uh...” Kyo turned flaming red and looked away, seemingly angry. “I can’t get out of this tree.”
For a moment Yuki looked stunned. “What do you mean,” he asked carefully, “that you can’t get out of the tree?”
“I. Can’t. Get. Down.” Kyo said flatly. Yuki looked annoyed, and then climbed back up unsteadily. He had only the use of one hand, since the other one throbbed with pain every time he moved.
“What do I have to do, pull you out? Kyo, you have to get down.”
“I can’t,” Kyo exclaimed through clenched teeth. Yuki looked a little more then exasperated.
“Honestly Kyo, you just faced Akito off and won, which is almost as bad as nearly dying,” Yuki paused, contemplating that fact, “and now you’re afraid of getting out of a small tree?”
Kyo scowled at the rat, mainly because he knew Yuki was right. Finally, after pleading, bribing and jeering, Kyo managed his way out of the tree—without hitting Yuki.
Kyo was beside himself with anger, Yuki’s way of finally getting him out of the tree had gotten to him. But when he looked over at him, the anger dissipated. Yuki was leaning against the tree, nursing his arm and looking at Kyo with a small smile that looked painfully fake.
“Yuki...shit we need to get you to a doctor.”
Yuki shook his head helplessly. “It’s ok, I’m fine, really,” he said, his calm and level voice back. Kyo didn’t like it. He liked the moody Yuki, the irrational one with his raw emotions and random outbursts of affection.
“Stop it,” Kyo said suddenly. Yuki looked at him in surprise.
“Stop what,” he asked.
“That!” Kyo exclaimed, frowning. He scratched his head in frustration as Yuki stared at him questioningly.
“Oh screw it,” he muttered. He took three quick steps towards Yuki and pulled him into a deep, passionate kiss. He tangled his fingers in Yuki’s silky hair and was ecstatic when Yuki wrapped his arms around his waist and deepened the kiss.
Kyo lost his footing and slipped, pulling Yuki down with him, but they didn’t notice. After a minute of rolling around in the leaves, the pair pulled away for air, sitting up properly.
Kyo grinned at Yuki, who looked positively ridiculous now that he was all dirty again. Kyo crawled over to where Yuki was sitting and brushed some twigs and leaves out from his hair, and then helped him up.
“No more fooling around or stalling. The first thing we’re doing is getting you to a hospital.” Kyo carefully helped Yuki up a hill. They were almost there. Almost home free. Just a few more steps, and they’d be in their town, they could get Yuki some help, and they could leave and start a new life.
“Thought I’d find you guys here.”
Kyo and Yuki froze. Sitting on a wall in front of them, was a member of the zodiac.
“Akito isn’t too smart, is he? He never even thought of just waiting here for you two...don’t you say anything!”
Kyo was cut off from saying a word, so he just held Yuki even more protectively.
“Please, don’t turn us in,” Yuki pleaded.
Dark solemn eyes seemed to be laughing at the two battered teens, and they gazed coldly at them.
“Well...”
